proposal guidelines for 2012
ABOUT SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE
SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE will provide 3 exhibition spaces for practitioners operating across the visual arts. The spaces provide exhibitors with the flexibility to exhibit in a single space or in various combinations of the art spaces.
SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE is situated at Level 1 626 Glenferrie Road Hawthorn (just south of Burwood Rd above Tabletalk Cafe). The Art Space will bring to Hawthorn and surrounding suburbs exciting art across media by early-career artists.
The details of the 3 exhibition spaces are provided below (see images on separate IMAGES page):

A gallery hanging system and gallery lighting system are used.
EXHIBITION ARRANGEMENTS:
exhibitions run for three (3) weeks.
gallery hours for 2012 are Thursday – Sunday 12 – 5 pm

The gallery, however, will assist in facilitating sales directly with the artist.

HIRE RATES
SPACE 1 $ 350 per week
SPACE 2 $ 220 per week
SPACE 3 $ 150 per week
PLEASE NOTE:
bond $ 100 per exhibition space
(refundable on return of gallery to original condition and payment of any additional costs)
deposit 40% total gallery hire is required to confirm booking
This deposit is non-refundable
balance the balance of gallery hire is payable 6 weeks prior to exhibition

will:
email your exhibition details/invitation to SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE email list
assist with design and or printing of exhibition flyers
provide a line-listing in Art Almanac (any additional advertising at artist expense)
organise opening night and provide bar staff
provide curatorial / practical installation advice
provide basic tools and materials to assist hanging and return walls to their original state
provide public liability insurance
provide staff for one-day per week for the duration of the exhibition
As exhibiting artist(s), you are responsible for:
assisting with installation of your exhibition
dismantling your exhibition
printing your invitation cards (template and design assistance can be provided)
any insurances outside of public liability insurance
arrangements and cost of transporting your work to and from Gallery
returning the gallery space to pre-exhibition condition on time
sitting exhibition / gallery for a minimum 1 day per week during the exhibition. Sitting time expected is determined by the number of exhibition spaces taken – please note: roster will be determined in consultation with exhibiting artists prior to commencement of the exhibition. In the event artists are unable to sit they will be charged $100 per day that they are unable to sit to cover additional staff expenses
Conditions:
any promotional material (including exhibition advertising, flyer etc) must be approved by the gallery prior to printing
installation of exhibitions will usually on the Monday or Wednesday in the first week of the exhibition from 9am or at a time determined by mutual agreement
dismantling of exhibitions is on the last Sunday evening from 5pm;
all work exhibited must have been produced by the exhibiting artist/s
SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE will not accept works that are unfinished or wet
you must tell us if you are represented by an agent or gallery
SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE will take all reasonable care but accepts no responsibility for theft of art works or art works damaged by fire, storm, flood or accident. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to obtain appropriate insurance cover if they so wish
200 invitations are required 3-4 weeks prior to exhibition
in order to extend audiences, SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE may schedule functions outside of exhibition hours. Such activities would be supervised by gallery staff.
opening night:
opening night celebrations occur on the first Wednesday evening of the exhibition 6-8 pm (other times may be possible by negotiation)
gallery staff will supervise the opening celebrations.
If you would like to exhibit at SUBJECT MATTER ART SPACE :
exhibition proposals should include the following:
your name, address and contact details
visual support material in a format best suited to the work
a current CV (brief)
a statement that outlines the concepts underpinning your work
preferred exhibition space(s)
an brief exhibition plan or comments - (how you intend to use the space(s))
any special requirements
preferred dates
a stamped self addressed envelope for return of support material
any other supporting material you consider relevant.
for group exhibitions, you should also include:
one (brief) CV for each group member
name, address and phone number of each group member
name and phone number of primary contact person.
